Best Things to Do in St. Thomas When on a Cruise

beautiful sea creatureHere is a list of things you can participate in while in the capital of St. Thomas, Charlotte Amalie:

Charlotte Amalie

The busy town of Charlotte Amalie is the main attraction inside St. Thomas and it’s a 15-minute taxi ride away from both cruise ports.

It is possible to walk into town from Havensight. Even though it is only around a 30-minute stroll, the weather inside St. Thomas is typically sunny and hot; therefore, an open-air shuttle or cab might be comfier.

If you want to enjoy an easygoing day of visiting by yourself, it is possible to make your own historic “walking tour,” do a bit of duty-free shopping, and then stop in at a local restaurant or bar to take in a little of the island life in St. Thomas.

Duty-free Shopping

The island of St. Thomas is well-known for its duty-free shopping deals, particularly for gemstones and gold jewelry, as well as high-quality linens and tablecloths. In addition, you will come across a lot of items that make fantastic souvenirs.

Of course, you can start your shopping at Havensight Mall when you get off the ship. Stop in at the Ocean Surfari store there for great deals on performance shirts and shorts and other Virgin Islands-branded merchandise. Then venture downtown to add to your shopping and sightseeing.

Within Charlotte Amalie, you will encounter hundreds of local and brand-name stores alongside Main Street and its cross streets. You also will see a local flea or straw market that has a selection of tee–shirts, handmade jewelry, and other types of souvenirs.

Charlotte Amalie Downtown National Heritage Sites

Within Charlotte Amalie’s historic district, there is a multitude of sights and buildings that history enthusiasts will appreciate.

Blackbeard’s Castle

A historic site, Blackbeard’s Castle, got its name from the famous pirate Edward Thatch (they referred to him as Blackbeard because of his black beard). Blackbeard’s Castle is actually a watchtower overlooking Charlotte Amalie and boasting amazing views.

Fort Christian

Fort Christian, constructed in the 1600’s, is St. Thomas’ oldest standing building. The fort was constructed by King Christian V in order to protect Danish settlers in St. Thomas, but over the years it has been used as a church, administrative offices, and a prison. Currently, it’s a museum that houses artifacts.
